Do I need kayaking experience? If not, how difficult is it to do?
No kayaking experience is required. It is recommended that you are in good health. This is an outdoor adventure that requires exercise! We only paddle between 2-4 hours a day with several stops for lunch and/or snorkeling. More avid paddlers can go for more strenuous paddles from our campsites. You will receive basic instruction on how to paddle your kayak. Our motorized escort boat will carry all of your baggage and supplies not needed for the day of paddling. It is also available to "give a lift" to those paddlers who might need a break. Our paddling guests range in age from 4 years old to 77 years old! Most have never kayaked before or experienced the sport once or twice.
What is the difference between sea kayaking and river kayaking?
River kayaking takes you down a flowing river and may present the paddler with a variety of obstacles and challenges. Sea Kayaking with Kayak Kadavu offers sheltered open water kayaking without exposure to surf or tides. There is a barrier reef around most of Kadavu (and completely around the areas we kayak) that great a swimming pool affect post of the time. With sea kayaking, you would use the muscles in your arms more since you ARE the power source of the kayak. It feels wonderful to place your paddle in the water, pull back, and feel your kayak slide forward. The sparkling aqua water of sea kayaking offers feelings of serenity and joy. Sea kayaking is not an adrenaline sport. It offers healthy exercise and a sense of well being.
How safe is the trip?
Our kayak expedition inside the Great Astrolabe barrier reef of Kadavu offers calm waters and virtually no waves. The trip is very safe. It IS an outdoor camping adventure complete with potential natural hazards. No one should come on this type of trip expecting it to be completely free of some forms of small dangers. The expedition is set up to maximize the safety of our paddlers. That is why we have return guests and lasting friendships with those we have taken paddling with us.
How many people are on the expedition?
We general have no more than 10 paddlers (in addition to the guides). This allows us to give personalized attention to our paddlers.
What type of kayaks do you use?
We use BOTH single double kayaks sit-on-top kayaks made of sturdy plastic. Aquaterra Prisms and Ocean Kayak Scupper Pros are the singles we use. Ocean Kayak Zests are the doubles. Each paddler has a back rest, life vest and paddle. Sit on Top kayaks are wonderful for the tropics. They are very easy to get on and off of. In addition, there are a number of times when snorkeling is an option while we are kayaking and the sit-on-top (or open deck) kayaks are great for this!
Where are we sleeping?
This is a camping expedition! We provide tents for your wonderful journey. The white sand beaches of the west shore of Kadavu provide the most incredible "living room" with a view!
What will we be doing besides kayaking?
We will be doing alot snorkeling which is one of the activities that Fiji is known for. Lots of colorful fish, corals, and starfish are what you will enjoy while snorkeling. You will also enjoy hiking (to 1 or 2 waterfalls), swimming, visits to local villages or with local people, beachcombing (Fiji offers the best sea shell hunting we've found!), time to relax and do nothing, time to kayak on your own while we are camped.
